Selkirk boss out to impress

NEW-look Selkirk kick-off the football season with a game away to champions Whitehill Welfare this weekend.

And manager Paul Brownlee will be aiming to impress during his first season in charge of the East of Scotland League Premier Division side ahead of their first match on Saturday (kick-off 2.30 p.m.).

He took over from Fraser Lothian who stepped down during the close season after leading the club to its first silverware, the Image Printers Cup, in 30 years.

The former Berwick Rangers defender is still celebrating the club"s reprieve from relegation after Annan Athletic won a place in the Scottish Football League earlier this month.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph this week, Selkirk vice-chairman Jim Moody said: 'We are not expecting miracles.

'One minute we were in the First Division and the next minute we are back in the Premier League but, we can"t start with a tougher game than against Whitehill - who were the champions last season.'

Selkirk, who lost 4-2 to Broxburn Juniors in a friendly last Saturday, will be without Ryan Pritchard (broken ankle) and Gary McShane (broken ribs) this weekend.

But they will field two trialists as well as a number of new summer signings.

They were due to play Stow in their final warm-up match last night (Tuesday),

Moody added: 'We won"t be a push over. We have a good young side who will be eager to prove themselves and can compete against the best of them of their day.'

Meanwhile, Gala Fairydean will have to wait to kick-off the new campaign at home to Gretna next Wednesday (August 13).

They were due to travel to Edinburgh University in the Image Printers Cup this weekend but the game has been rearranged for the following Saturday (August 16) after the city side announced the funeral of their President, Dr Andrew Ross, will take place this weekend.
