Scouting for girls football

SCOTTISH Borders Council is looking for the next batch of youngsters to join the girls" football development squad for the forthcoming season.

Scottish Football Association (SFA) football development officers will be holding trials for the new squads at Tweedbank Sports Complex on Wednesday 3 September, from 5-7pm.

The squads will be chosen from the following age categories:

15s born on or after January 1st 1994 (S1, S2, S3 age pupils)

17s born on or after January 1st 1992 (S4, S5, age pupils).

Two squads of 16 players will be selected and all previous squad members should attend. After the selection process, the squads will be coached weekly at the astro pitch at Tweedbank and will play a series of matches against other teams from the South East regions.

SFA football development officer, Dougie Anderson, said: 'Through some of our recent programmes, such as the Bank of Scotland Soccer 1, we have met many girls who enjoy playing football and are also very talented. So this is a great opportunity for them to develop their skills and go on to play football at a higher level.'

It"s not just secondary girls who are being encouraged to play football - girls in primary school can also develop their skills at the forthcoming SFA Girls" Participation Centre, to be held on Wednesday evenings at Tweedbank astro-pitch. It starts on Wednesday 10 September, from 5-6pm and is suitable for girls in classes P5-P7.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education, Councillor Graham Garvie, said: 'We have had a great success rate of players who have come through the SFA development programmes in recent years and went on to greater things. I would therefore urge parents or coaches who know any girls who might be interested to get in touch, because it is really a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.'
