Gala Fairydean, 4; Craigroyston, 1.

GALA Fairydean turned in a slick performance to net their first home win of the season against city side Craigroyston at the weekend.

However, the result, which nets them third spot in East of Scotland League Division One, was overshadowed by an injury to talismanic frontman Des Sutherland - the club"s top goalscorer last season.

He was stretchered off following a clash with visiting keeper Craig Weir and was taken by ambulance to hospital suffering suspected ligament damage, amid fears he could be out for months.

And full-back Scott Mackenzie was also carried off to hospital with a back injury, after falling awkwardly following a challenge for a header, to deepen the club"s injury woes.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph pitchside after the game, Gala Fairydean co-manager Bryan Templeton - a makeshift physio - said: 'I"m chuffed to bits with that - it was a great result.

'Craigroyston showed that they were a decent side by beating Vale of Leithen 5-1 at the start of the season, but I thought we played some great football and scored some cracking goals.'

Nevertheless he added: 'We don"t want to lose players like that (Sutherland and Mackenzie) so early in the season and we hope it"s not too serious.'
