GALA United stalwart Graham Wilson is recovering this week after being rushed to hospital following a freak training ground accident.

The utility player, nicknamed Geordie, snapped his leg in two after slipping going into a challenge with team-mate Keith McAulay on the frozen astroturf at Tweedbank Sports Complex.

He broke his ankle, which was ripped from its foot socket, after getting his legs tangled in the tussle before crashing to the ground.

And the 32-year-old Newcastle United fanatic, who was left screaming in agony, had to be consoled by his team-mates as paramedics rushed to the scene before taking him by ambulance to Borders General Hospital in nearby Melrose.

Wilson, who spent three days in hospital following the slip on Thursday around 9pm, suffered a double leg-break and tore all the tendons and ligaments around his dislocated ankle. He is now in plaster and unable to work in the run up to Christmas and will be sidelined into the New Year.

It raises new question marks over the future of the ageing all-weather sports pitch in Tweedbank.

A source close to Wilson told the Border Telegraph: 'He (Wilson) asked the doctor if he would be able to play football after the accident and the reply he got was yes - which is brilliant because he couldn"t play football before the accident.'

Only joking big man, get well soon…
