Gala Fairydean 1 2 Stirling University

GALA"S glimmer of promotion hope ended as Stirling"s students provided a lesson in concentration.

The Dean"s defence switched off for a brief three-minute spell midway through the first half - and quickly found themselves two down.

Boss Fraser Lothian, speaking after the game on Wednesday night, admitted his side had dropped too many points to reach a promotion spot. He told the Border Telegraph: 'We will keep going and try to win as many games as we can but it looks highly unlikely that we"ll be amongst the top teams.

'Our performance wasn"t bad tonight, but we were a bit naïve at times.'

Pacey striker Jason Boland always looked a handful and it cam as no surprise when he slotted home Neil Shave"s squared pass on 20 minutes.

And before the Fairies could mount a recovery plan, the talented teenager strolled unmarked into the box to head Mark McCallagn"s front-post cross beyond keeper Dave Catlin.

Gala almost pulled themselves back into the game on 35 minutes as Grant Robinson forced Thomas McCulloch into a great save to prevent the powerful low drive reaching the bottom corner.

Former Vale of Leithen centre-half Creag Roberston was red-carded for the Students on the hour after he blocked Des Sutherland on the edge of the box.

But even with a man down Stirling continued to look dangerous with Callum Forbes stealing the ball from Steven Noble and rifling a shot off the inside of the post.

The Dean pulled a goal back with quarter-of-an-hour to go. Sutherland curled a perfect 25-yard freekick over the wall and beyond the outstretched McCulloch.
