HERIOT-WATT'S students moved off the bottom of the Premier table by firing a shock five goals past title contenders Edinburgh City.

Michael Renwick's side clocked up only their second win of the campaign with a tremendous second half display at Meadowbank.

Lars Berger struck four times and Chris Donnelly also found the net for the university team.

Manager Renwick said: "I changed things around at half time and everyone took on board what they were asked to do. We played really well in the second half and deserved the win."

Lothian Thistle remain on top of the league with a 4-1 win over Preston Athletic at the Pennypit.

Mark Lothian scored a double with Wayne McIntosh and Gary Black also hitting the target for Alan O'Neil's side.

O'Neil said: "Preston are a big physical team so it was good to come here and get a result. After last week's defeat against Spartans it was important to bounce back."

But Spartans are only a point behind in second after they beat Coldstream 5-1 at Ainslie Park.

Tynecastle also have their sites on the top spot after Wayne Sproule fired in a double during his side's 4-0 win over Selkirk. Ross Alexander and Steven Swanson also netted for Murray Balloch's side. Balloch said: "We played some good football and deserved the points."

Edinburgh University and Civil Service Strollers fought out a goalless draw at Peffermill.

In the First Division Vale of Leithen's season of wins came to an end when they conceded two late goals at Leith Athletic. An Aaron Somerville double and Darren Gillon goal gave Rab Paget's side a 3-1 lead with 15 minutes to go, but Shaun Martin's double made the score 3-3.

A Richard Milne goal was enough for Stirling University to edge out Gretna 1-0 at Raydale Park. Craigroyston beat Eyemouth United 3-1, Ormiston won 2-1 against Easthouses Lily and Peebles came from behind to win 3-2 over Hawick Royal Albert.

In the South Regional Cup Jamie Gibson scored a hat-trick for Gala Fairydean but was still in the losing side as his team crashed out 4-3 at Whitehill Welfare.
