FORMER Gala Fairydean manager Jim Jefferies and former Gala Academy pupil John Collins have both been tipped to be the new manager of Scotland following the sacking of George Burley.

However, both have played down speculation.

Jefferies, now in charge of Kilmarnock and the longest serving manager in the Scottish Premier League, has been named among the bookies favourites alongside Dundee United boss Craig Levein.

He began his managerial career in the East of Scotland League and lives in Lauder.

Meanwhile, Collins played in the Dark Blue for Scotland the last time they qualified for a major finals - more than a decade ago. He netted a penalty against Brazil in the opening match of the 1998 World Cup in France.

The former Hibs boss, who won 58 caps and scored 12 goals for his country, also had a short spell in charge at Belgian club Charleroi but announced his departure after the club secured their First Division status near the end of last season.

Burley, who won just three of his 14 ,matches during his 22 month spell at the Hampden helm, was sacked following a 3-0 friendly defeat away to Wales last weekend.

But, with Scotland not due to play again until a friendly against the Czech Republic in March, the Scottish Football Association is not expected to make a decision on Burley's replacement until early in the New Year.
