Gala Fairydean Under 17s 3 - 3 Menchester Men

GARRY Fraser's last minute wonder strike salvaged a draw for his veteran select side at the Public Park on Sunday.

It was a major achievement for Menchester to get through the 90 minutes let alone achieve a result against the young Dean outfit.

Remarkably they only required one substitute during the course of the game after 50-plus Ian Fraser pulled a hamstring.

He was part of a four-man defence with a combined age of 156 who were up against just 15-year-old Josh Loftus as the young Dean side preferred to play a holding game with a cautious 4-1-4-1 formation.

It was a total mis-match as proved in the 15th minute when Loftus slotted home only to be robbed of his goal due to a dubious offside call by referee Scott Bowers aided by the collective frantic pleas of the ageing back four.

The under 17s went for it after the break and it came as no surprise when Neil Rafferty broke the deadlock on the hour mark.

Menchester were thrown a lifeline when an outrageous dive by Mark Forsyth under Dean Robson's challenge was somehow rewarded with a penalty which was expertly converted by Ally McCulloch.

A fine solo effort from Greig Forrest then gave them the lead and a major shock seemed on the cards.

But Gala got back on level terms when Adam Williams rose unchallenged to head home a Rafferty corner.

A glorious goal five minutes from time from Andy Stavert when he curled the ball into the roof of the net from 25 yards seemed to have won it for the youngsters .

But it was Fraser who had the last word leading to a bizarre pile-on goal celebration by his relieved team-mates and more damage to the Public Park pitch than the "Shows" could ever cause.

Gala Fairydean Under 17s : Murray, Williams, Robson, Stavert, Halley, Leckie, Howarth, Hardie, Miller, Loftus and Reid. Subs (all used): Macdonald, Rafferty, Fairburn.

Menchester Men: Gierus, Deans, McCulloch, I.Fraser, (sub Paterson 63 mins), G.Fraser, Scott, Young, Forrest, Gass, Forsyth, S.Fraser.

*Gala Fairydean Under 17s are due to face Peebles FC Under 17s in a league match at Netherdale on Sunday, kick off 11a.m.
