Galbraith: Goal was a moment to remember

HIBS star Danny Galbraith dedicated his first goal for his new club to his dad - after scoring a dramatic late winner over former champions Celtic on his birthday.

The 19-year-old former Manchester United starlet, from Galashiels, made the back page headlines in most of the national papers following the Scottish Premier League match at Parkhead on Wednesday night last week.

He revealed his dad, who has supported him throughout his career, did not attend the game because it was his birthday.

However, the former Galashiels Academy pupil, who kicked-off his career at city rivals Hearts, rushed back to his roots in the Borders for a double celebration the following night.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph this week, Galbraith said: "It was a moment to remember. Seeing the ball go past Artur Boruc and into the net makes it all worthwhile.

"I managed to get back to Gala on Thursday and went for a meal with my family." But he added: "I don't want to get carried away, it's only one game."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, another footballing icon from the Borders was also making headlines last week.

Jim Jefferies, who lives in Lauder and started his managerial career at Gala Fairydean, was appointed manager of Hearts for a second time on Friday - following the sacking of Csaba László.

The 59-year-old former club captain, who won the Scottish Cup with the Tynecastle Club during his first spell in charge in 1998, said: "There was a feeling I would come back.

"When a club like Hearts comes calling it is too good an opportunity to turn down. You have to be in my shoes as a supporter, player and manager to know how that feels."

Meanwhile, former Rangers striker Steven MacLean, from Peebles, signed for Aberdeen before the January transfer window closed.
