FORMER Falkirk star Andy Lawrie came out of retirement to help his hometown team lift some silverware.

He was part of Scottish Borders Council's Sports Development Unit squad which won the Lunchtime Football League at the Queens Leisure Centre in Galashiels.

The former professional defender, who retired from football last year following a short stint at Stirling Albion, is now a coaching development officer at the local authority.

It is the second year in a row the sports development unit have won the trophy after losing just game - against a team from the Scottish Public Pensions Agency.

The winning team were as follows: Gary Fraser, Andy Lawrie, Ian Fraser, Dougie Anderson and Mark Forsyth.

Presenting them with their prize, Gwen Bradley, from the Queens Leisure Centre, said: "I would like to thank everyone who gave up their lunchtimes to participate in the league. Everyone played their fixtures in good spirits and fair play."

The league was initially trialled at the beginning of last year and was a huge success so was introduced once again in September 2009.

It encourages males and females of any age or ability to enter teams into the five-a-side football league which is played on a weekly basis between 12noon and 1pm.

At the end of each week, the league table is updated and the team with the most points at the end of the tournament is presented with a trophy donated by The Trophy Guy in Galashiels.

This year, teams from DS Dalgleish, Prostrakan, SPPA and SBC took part in the tournament..

Scottish Borders Council's Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education, Councillor Graham Garvie, said: "The lunchtime league provides a fantastic opportunity for people to get together with their friends and colleagues and get active during their lunch break."

Bur he added: "The aim of the tournament is not to focus on the winning but to have fun and keep fit so I hope plenty more people take the opportunity to sign up for next season."

Anyone who thinks they have a team that can challenge for the league title next season should contact the Queens Leisure Centre on 01896 752233.
