A NEW six-a-side football league is to kick off at Tweedbank later this month.

Scotland Leagues, the largest and most well known provider of five and six aside leagues in the country, have teamed up with the sports complex to bring back the Borders 6-a-side Superleague.

It ended in 2009 when the astroturf pitch at Tweedbank was closed for refurbishment.

However, now that the new pitch has reopened the league is restarting.

It is envisaged the competition will run every Monday evening between 7-9pm.

Organiser Paul Spacey said: "We have already had interest from teams in Galashiels, Hawick and Kelso so it's going to be a good mixture of teams with some healthy local rivalry.

"I have been in touch with Tweedbank over the past few months regarding the new pitch and they have found a suitable slot for the league on Mondays which is ideal.

"All standards of teams are welcome. Whether it be friends, work colleagues or just a bunch of guys from the pub looking to get a bit more exercise to work off a few extra pounds thanks to the beer consumed over the Winter."

He added: "We have been organising leagues for five years now and our system really is simple. Teams just turn up and pay their match fee; we take care of absolutely everything else."

The cost is just £3 per player per week and intense matches last 30 minutes with roll-on roll-off substitutes to really get the heart pumping.

Teams can follow their progress on the most interactive and well used website in the Scottish small-sided football industry, www.eurosixes.com . There is the option of submitting match reports, uploading player details and photos, checking the latest top goalscorer charts and much more.

The league will be affiliated to the Scottish Amateur FA and qualified SFA referees will be used exclusively to officiate all matches and the winners and runners-up will enter Scotland 's Official 6-a-side Cup which has been running since 2004.
