THE future of football in the Borders appears to be in safe hands.

A total of 20 goalkeepers, ranging in age from 12-to-30-years-old, have teamed up with the SFA to take part in a Goalkeeping Coaching School at Netherdale, Galashiels.

The sessions kicked-off after local football coach Alastair McCulloch, a member of East of Scotland First Division side Gala Fairydean, requested some structured coaching for goalkeepers in the Borders.

And, after a successful six week block before Christmas, it has been decided to continue the training for the foreseeable future. The sessions run from 5.30-6.30pm for the under 16s and 6.30-8pm for the adults.

The coaching restarted last night (Tuesday, February 22) and costs £15 for a five week block.

Head coach John Dodds, from Selkirk, who previously played for Scottish Football League sides Ayr United and Queen of the South, said: "This is a great opportunity for goalkeepers young and old to come along and take part in some structured coaching sessions.

"The sessions consist of drills and exercises used by goalkeepers at professional clubs. After six weeks I have already seen some huge improvements to the goalkeepers who have attended."

For more information on the goalkeeping sessions please contact Scottish Borders Council's sports development officer Andy Lawrie on 01896 756274 or andy.lawrie@scotborders.gov.uk
