Hawick football pupils win Scotland call up
IT was the first ever official international football match to be played. And, next month, two secondary school pupils from the Borders will make history when they make their debut in the famous fixture.
Hawick High School pupils Lauren Mackenzie and Carly Noble have been selected for the first ever Scotland side to face England in an under 15 girls international.
They took part in the team's first training session at the state-of-the-art Toryglen Football Centre in Glasgow on Monday.
The 18-strong squad, which is assembled from schools across Scotland, will travel to Cardiff in early April to compete in the annual Four Nations Tournament along with Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Before they meet the auld enemy on their return.
Rod Houston, President of the Scottish Schools' FA, said: "We're delighted to unveil the U15 Girls International squad for 2011. Our International schools' set-up has an illustrious history of nurturing young talent in Scotland, not only for boys but also for girls.
"Our coaches do a fantastic job, not only on the football pitch, but off it too, and the girls will go home with a valuable life, as well as football experience."
Lloyds TSB Scotland, who recently agreed a two-year partnership with the Scottish Schools' FA, provide comprehensive support of the inter-schools' football programme in Scotland as well as to the U15 Girls and U18 Boys International Squads.
The Scottish schools' International set-up has an illustrious history of producing future stars. Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Scott Brown, Darren Fletcher, Julie Fleeting and Kim Little are just some of the names to have played schools' football at International level.
This year, more than 25,000 school children will participate in a Lloyds TSB Scotland supported programme.
Congratulating the local lassies on their achievement this week, Craig Gilfether, Bank Manager at Lloyds TSB Scotland Hawick, said: "To play for your country represents the pinnacle of sport at any level. Lloyds TSB Scotland is proud to support both the U15 Girls and U18 Boys International squads and we wish both the very best of luck for 2011."
