GALA Athletic kicked off a new season of football in style.

The newly-formed Border Amateur League Division C side paraded their new strips, sponsored by Niki's Bar in Galashiels, ahead of their first game of the season at Tweedbank sports complex last Saturday.

They have filled the void left following the demise of Gala United.

However, despite losing 2-1 to Winton in their opening game, manager Mike Smith remains upbeat on the season ahead.

He told the Border Telegraph: "We have a predominantely young side, along with a few experienced lads, but they have put in a good shift pre-season and are really keen to impress and try to make this a success.

"Many of the young lads like watching football but haven't been involved at Border Amateur League level before so this will be a learning curve for them."

But he added: "We've not set ourselves any targets for the season - we are just taking it one game at a time."

Mike would like to thank Borders Sport and Leisure Trust and Niki's Bar for their support.
