And they have sent out an open invitation for any players between, and including, the ages of 16 and 19 to apply.

Funding agreements with the Scottish Government and other agencies were reached last week for the new Modern Apprenticeship posts.

The eight teenagers will train every day, take coaching courses and also learn life skills at the Yarrow Park base.

Selkirk manager Stevie Forrest said: “All of our Modern Apprentices will work towards Scottish Vocational Qualifications in sports management as well as going through their coaching qualifications.

“We want the boys to become accomplished footballers at the same time as learn about developing careers in sport and coaching.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys and is good at playing football.” The apprenticeships can last up to three years with salaries dependant on age and increasing with each year.

And they are entitled to up to 20 days of paid holidays each year.

Mr Forrest added: “The finer points will be discussed with anyone applying and their parents but the schemes are covered by the minimum wage and there will be the opportunity to earn more if they can work their way into the Lowland League team.

“We are looking to build up the youth system at Selkirk so there will plenty opportunities for our apprentices to take coaching sessions.” It is expected that each of the apprentices will train every morning with the club’s seven full-time French players.

And following lunch they will be educated in life skills ranging from cookery and nutrition to banking and driving.

They will also play up to twice a week in competitive matches.

Selkirk have also created full-time positions at the club for its four French players from last year - Jordaine Orain, Julio Tonelle, Yannis Lamgari and Benjamin Huteau - as well as three players that they have already signed this summer - Florain Moulet, Anthony Bal and Yohann Becharia.

Selkirk spokesman Ross Anderson told us: “The seven French players we have taken on already are contracted under a different scheme. They have all come through similar apprenticeship schemes at the top clubs in France and their knowledge will rub off on our own apprentices.

“We have excellent coaches in place and the facilities at Yarrow Park are improving each season.

“We are looking to the future and the Modern Apprenticeships will benefit the boys we take on and the club.” The Modern Apprenticeship trials will take place at Yarrow Park on Saturday, June 21.

All players must register in advance and anyone who is already signed to another club must obtain written permission for taking part.
