A header from player/manager Dunn, along with a William Smillie double and Dean Carruthers goal saw the Berwickshire men win 4-1 in an impressive showing versus their East Lothian opponents at WS Happer Park.

Dunn said: “It was a brilliant win for us against a hard and tough tackling Tranent team.

“There is no way we can win the South Cup but, with only 18 league games, we would like to go as far as possible to keep the season going.” Leithen Rovers manager Gary Hastie blasted his side despite beating Coldstream Amateurs 4-2.

Top scorer Alan McMath bagged two, and Peter Shearlaw and Ross Forrest found the net, but Hastie said: “It was our worst performance of the season.

“The players have been praised when they have played well but they were not good enough in this game. All the credit deserves to go to Coldstream, who played well.

“The only consolation is that we are in the next round.” Tweeddale Rovers required extra time to beat Dunbar Athletic but eventually won 5-3 thanks to a double from Grant Wilson, with Nick Rogers, David Lindsay and Craig Collins.

Gordon thumped Linton Hotspur 7-2 while a Craig Lawrie strike was not to enough for Gala Hotspur who lost 2-1 at Duns.

Daniel Chandler scored a brace to take Jed Legion into round two with a 2-1 win over Hawick Waverley but nine-man Hawick Legion lost 4-3 on penalties to Dalmore United.

There were also heavy defeats for Eyemouth, Lauder and Peebles Amateurs to non-Borders opposition.

Stow’s Division A title hopes suffered a major dent with a 1-1 draw with struggling Ancrum, but it could have been a lot worse for Paul Young’s men. James Runciman scored an equaliser in the sixth minute of injury time after Jack Kelly thought he had notched the winner for Ancrum.

Chirnside United Colts remain rooted to the bottom of Division B after a 5-4 defeat at Langholm Legion, while Earlston Rhymers and Hawick United played out a 1-1 draw.

In Division C, Tweedmouth Amateurs extended their lead to six points after beating second placed Hawick Legion Rovers 3-0, while CFC Bowholm jumped above St Boswells by beating the Villagers 2-1 at Canonbie.
