The annual seven-aside competition with accompanying fun day has become a highlight of the footballing calendar in Tweeddale.

Marine Alec Lucas was killed in action during a tour of duty in Afghanistan on November 24, 2008. He was just 24.

He had played football for several local teams as well as captaining 45 Commando to the coveted Navy Cup.

As a tribute each summer all of the senior and amateur Peeblesshire teams along with visiting clubs and the Marines take part in the fundraising tournament.

Now in its sixth year - the £12,380 raised in May took the fundraising total to an incredible £105,576.

Alec’s father Adrian, who is one of the driving forces behind the memorial fund, this week told the Border Telegraph: “The event was a huge success due to the support, help and love of the local people who turned out in abundance.

“The family and organising committee, would like to thank everyone for their help and generosity.” On Sunday cheques worth £10,000 were handed over to the causes which were close to the heart of Alec - £7,000 to local football and £3,000 to military charities.

Peebles Youth Football received £3,500, while Vale of Leithen were given £800 to help towards creating disabled facilities at Victoria Park.

Peebles Rovers, Tweeddale Rovers, Peebles Amateurs and Leithen Rovers were all given £500 towards training equipment and kits.

Leithen Vale Sports Club in Innerleithen was also presented with a cheque for £500 and the Peebles Over 60s team were given £200.

The Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund were presented with £1000, a further £1000 was donated to the Woodland Garden at 45 Commando in Arbroath, and a third cheque for £1000 was given to the forces rehabilitation charity Horseback UK.

Adrian added: “The presentation also allowed us to express gratitude to some of the local supporters, whom we hadn’t had the chance to thank formally, for the help and contribution they made to a fantastic Memorial Tournament and Family Fun Day in Peebles.” Next year’s Alec Lucas Memorial Tournament and Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, May 30 at Whitestone Park in Peebles.
