On a day when wind, snow and rain saw 11 cup ties called off across the Borders, Spurs game at Eyemouth Amateurs went ahead despite hurricane like conditions.

The hosts went ahead on 20 minutes and Eyemouth went 2-0 up when awarded a penalty right on half time after Craig Lawrie was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Spurs improved after the break and pulled one back when Stewart Robertson scored after Lawrie’s header hit the bar, but the visitors could not find an equaliser.

But Blackie questioned why the game went ahead in the first place. He said: “The wind was blowing right across the pitch. The pitch was okay but the overhead conditions made it unplayable. I don’t know why the game was not called off.

“I have never seen so many throw ins in a game and it was a lottery from start to finish. It was virtually impossible to keep the ball in the park.

“The players tried their best in awful conditions and we cannot fault their efforts.” Hawick Legion and Peebles Amateurs had to battle against snow in their tie, with Legion finishing 3-2 winners at Wilton Lodge Park.

Peebles went ahead thanks to a Fin Muir strike on 35 minutes only to be pegged back two minutes later.

Leon Miller’s header made it 2-1 to the Division C visitors on 51 minutes but Hawick equalised again before the match was halted by referee Alex Laidlaw due to blizzard conditions.

But the match did resume and Hawick claimed a winner with 15 minutes to go.

Peebles assistant coach Mark Wilson said: “Legion sit third in Division B but we matched them, which was pleasing to see.

“It was a decent game in difficult conditions and I felt we were unlucky not to force extra time.

“Its been a mixed first season back for us but we hope to move up Division C and have a run in the Sanderson Cup. We have the players to do both.” Also at Wilton Lodge Park, Hawick United were leading 4-2 against Earlston Rhymers but their tie was abandoned after 55 minutes due to heavy snow.

United’s goals came from a Kevin Strathdee double, Ross Scott and Danny Bolton but Hawick were left to rue the winter weather.
