Instead, the club are adopting a “pay what you can” policy used by several senior clubs this season including Albion Rovers, Clyde and Inverness, and asking for a donation at the gate.

All proceeds from this venture will be donated to the Scottish Heart at Risk Testing (HART) charity with a collection bucket on the turnstiles.

Spectators normally pay £5 for entry to Gala Fairydean Rovers home matches. Premier Club card holders and children under 16 normally get free entry to Lowland League games but on this occasion they will also be asked to make a donation.

Wilma Gunn MBE, who formed the charity following the death of her son Cameron who collapsed playing five-a-side football on the eve of his 20th birthday, said: “We are delighted to be involved in a charity partnership with Gala Fairydean Rovers and look forward to working with the club in the future to raise awareness about heart disease.

“We congratulate the club on the pay what you can initiative at the gate and are grateful for the money that will be raised.” Scottish Hart is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and cardiomyopathy in particular.

The funds the Selkirk-based charity has raised has resulted in the supply of life-saving Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) to more than 30 locations in Scotland.

From the top of the Nevis Range in the Highlands to fitness centres in the Borders, Scottish HART has used its funds to establish the equipment and provide the necessary training and support. These machines have been used to save lives.

Gala Fairydean Rovers secretary Graeme McIver commented: “The club will shortly be unveiling a significant community initiative of which the tie-in with Scottish HART is just one part.

“We are working with a number of local charity partners and other organisations in an effort to ensure that Gala Fairydean Rovers FC is fully integrated within the community of Galashiels.

“The motto of our new initiative will be 'A club with a heart, in the heart of our community’.” Kick off at Netherdale on Saturday is 3pm.
