NEW-LOOK Selkirk recorded their first pre-season win on Saturday against Thorn Athletic.

And manager Steve Forrest immediately vowed that there is a lot more to come.

Many of the Yarrow Park summer signings played their part in the victory over the Caledonian League new boys with Murray Christie and Michael Collin scoring the goals.

Forrest said: “The first few games have been a bit hit and miss so it is good that we are starting to show what we can do.

“We were without three or four players who would expect to start today yet I’m delighted that everyone who played did exactly what they were asked to do.

“All of our players are comfortable on the ball and when there will be a lot better to come over the new few weeks and months.

“I don’t care too much about the scores just now it is all about performances and the players getting to know each other.” Although the Souters were without the likes of Ross Gray, Florian Moulet, Ouzy See and Sebastian Pyda there was still a squad of 18 players available for Saturday’s friendly.

And they couldn’t have got off to a better start as former Hearts youngster Murray Christie fired home the opener after only three minutes.

Phil Addison was unfortunate not to make it two on nine minutes as he latched onto Garry O’Connor’s cut back but Liam McWilliams was on hand to save with his feet.

The relatively unknown Thorn Athletic have already run BSC Glasgow close – going down 2-1 – in a recent friendly and they began to show their capabilities as the half wore on.

On 22 minutes Craig McMahon’s looping header came back off the bar.

And five minutes later he squeezed between James Harley and Conan McDiarmid only for his lob to pushed beyond the post by Jamie Newman.

Selkirk did show some glimpses of class with Jon McInally drilling some terrific passes around the park.

And his through ball to Jack Hay on the half hour was slammed inches wide of the goal.

Thorn were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes after Jamie Pyper, who had just came on to replace the injured James Harley, tripped Stuart Robertson just inside the area.

But Newman was equal to Michael McKinnon’s spot kick.

Hay almost doubled the home advantage just three minutes later as he blasted a spectacular volley against the bar from 25 yards out.

The second half was regularly interrupted with substitutions from both teams.

But O’Connor still went close with a couple of powerful efforts from around the edge of the area.

McWilliams did produce a fantastic reaction save on 74 minutes to deny substitute Michael Collin, but the youngster coolly drilled home the rebound to double Selkirk’s lead.

Athletic finished strongly with Gregor Amos doing well to hold onto a Dean Scott shot.

But the former Falkirk keeper was beaten two minutes from time after Tom Smith darted past Pyper to fire home a low angled shot.
