FOOTBALL returns to Netherdale this weekend as Gala Fairydean kick off their pre-season with a match against League One side Airdrie.

The Diamonds beat Steven Noble’s team 3-1 in the same early fixture last season.

And the manager is hoping for another good performance from his improving squad as well as the benefits from an early return to action.

Noble told us: “By starting our pre-season early last year we went on to our highest Lowland League finish.

“We started training last week and we should be ready to provide a stiff test for Airdrie.

“They are a full-time team with big ambitions and we want to be able to compete with these type of teams.”

Noble has already secured agreements from two or three new players who will be able to sign at the start of July.

And he also has the vast majority of the squad, including Ross Aitchison, Scott Main, Darren Smith, Billy Miller and his brother Stuart, that earned a tenth place finish signed up.

Noble added: “We have several new faces on the way and we will making announcements during the first week in July when they are out of contract with their current clubs.

“I am happy with the way the squad is shaping up this season and I’m confident the new players will improve us further.

“We did well against Airdrie last season and I’d like to see us compete well again.”

The Diamonds parted company with head coach Mark Wilson at the weekend and as we went to press had still to appoint a successor.

Following Saturday’s match at Netherdale, Gala will entertain Eyemouth United next Thursday evening.

Further friendlies against Rangers and Lothian Thistle will also take place during July.

Premier Club cards do not apply for this match.

The admission prices are £5 for adults and £3 concessions.
