Academy pupils are Commonwealth class

TEAMWORK was the winner last Friday at Galashiels Academy's Commonwealth Games warm-up relays.
A group of five students from the school - Andrew Mitchell, Kristin Boland, Euan Graham, Robbie Czajka and Neil Turnbull - organised a morning of races for S1 and S2 pupils as part of the Lead 2014.
The Young Leaders staged heats and finals for teams from both years. And despite downpours forcing a week-long postponement and a few starting-gun mishaps the event went with a bang.
Euan Graham told the Border Telegraph: "The five of us were up at Edinburgh University to develop our leadership skills as part of the Lead 2014 project. What we learned helped us to put on the event today. It was a pity about the weather last week but it was worth waiting the seven days for the sunshine."
A total of six teams from the school's four registration houses competed in the S1 4x100 metres heats. Despite Yair losing anchor-man Coll Drury through injury after their heat, the remaining members took part in the final - and they broke the tape in a time of 1.04.09.
Great Britain age-group canoeist Alice Haining, who heads for the Junior World Championships in America next month, presented the winning trophy to Coll, Cameron Dalgleish, Eliana Clark and Rhona Gowans.
Rhona told us: "We decided to still race in the final after Coll was injured - it just meant we had to run a bit further."
The S2 heats were just as competitive with two Abbotsford teams and Tweed progressing.And following a competitive final it was the impressive quartet of Michael Louth, Hannah MacRae, Daniel Headspeath and Abbie Hood who won in a time of 56.04 seconds. Michael said: "We did really well and I'm pleased we won."
Alice Haining also presented the S2 trophy.
