HAWICK boxing club continue their busy start to the season tonight (Friday) at the Fallin Miner’s Club in Stirling.

Sixteen-year-old light welterweight Jack Purvis takes on the more experienced local fighter 18-year-old Glen Brown of the 1314 Boxing Club.

The Hawick fighter won his last bout against Craigmillar’s Reece Cullen a fortnight ago and is looking to take his record to 3 wins 0 defeats.

Purvis will be joined on the bill by 11-year-old Gala lad Lex Rogerson who is a pupil at Glendinning Primary School and who is making his debut in the ring when he takes on Colin Kearney of the 1314 club.

Rogerson is the middle of a trio of brothers who make the thrice weekly trip to train at the Hawick club.

His older brother Max lost a close split decision at Craigmillar recently.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph this week, coach Gareth Walker said: “We have had a good start to the season and we are keen to get the lads as many bouts as we possibly can and to keep them busy throughout the season.” Commenting on Jack Purvis, Walker added: “Jack is a strong and talented young lad.

“He boxed well in his last outing and although Glen Brown is a bit more experienced I’m sure Jack will handle the occasion. He can get a bit involved and he’s a lad that doesn’t mind a scrap. If he boxes well behind his jab he will do well.” And commenting on young Rogerson, the Hawick coach added: “Lex is a very good young lad. He is a gutsy and strong boy. I think he has a bright future.

“It’s his first fight and the lad he’s fighting has had one bout and won it but I am sure he’ll put on a good show.” The Hawick club has three entries in next month’s Scottish Novice Championships. Jack Purvis will contest the 64kg class, 13-year-old Macauly Walker boxes in the 48kg category and 12-year-old Connor Sutherland is entered in the 44kg division.
