Despite what looks like a mismatch, the spectators were entertained with a 14 try spectacle with Kelso scoring three very good tries.

A spirited start from Kelso kept the Gala defence on it’s toes before a clearing penalty into the corner saw Lewis Bertram crash over for the opening score. Straight from the kick-off a break up the touch line by Gary Adams sent Rex Jeffrey racing in for a second unconverted try.

Kelso did not take this lying down and a concentrated attack on the Gala line saw them over at the posts for a converted try to close the gap to three points.

Gala got back on track when a fine break by Rex Jeffrey sent David O’Hagan in for a try and Keith Young converted. Almost right away good interpassing sent Sean Johnstone over for an unconverted try.

Ewan Gunter laid on the next try with a great zigzag run to put Gavin Young away for the try ang brother Keith added the extras.

Kelso had the best of the closing minutes of the first half as they penned Gala into their 22 and added to their score with a penalty goal. A concerted effort by the Kelso pack took them to the Gala line and they drove over for a second converted try for a 29-17 half-time scoreline.

Gala were ringing the changes for the second half but this did not break their rhythm. From a scrum in front of the posts, quick hands sent Gavin Young in for try number six and Dean Keddie converted.

Kelso were caught napping when a long kick downfield saw them in trouble and Keith Young snatched the loose ball to score in the corner.

Gala’s next try was a cracker, with Fraser Hunter racing through the defence to send Mike Dodds away on a 40 yard dash and his pass put Fraser Welsh under the bar. Dean Keddie converted and Gala were out of sight.

Gala’s pace in the backs was showing and Keith Young broke several tackles for a solo try between the posts. Dean Keddie again adding the extras.

Kelso were not giving and another surge to the Gala line saw them over again for a converted try.

Ross Livingston scored the penultimate try with a neat sidestep and burst of pace to run round behind the posts. Lyle Campbell converted. And a great run by Gavin Young sent Scott Chapman over for an unconverted try.

Next week Gala A are at home to Glasgow Hawks.
