Boroughmuir A at Meggetland on Saturday and they had the boot of David O’Hagan to thank as he slotted five penalty goals in the strong wind.

The game was played in bright sunshine but there was a strong, bitterly cold wind blowing straight down the pitch. Gala had the sun in their eyes and the freezing wind to contend with in the first half and Boroughmuir used this advantage to pin Gala back into their own 22 for long periods.

Fortunately for Gala, the Boroughmuir goal kicker could not gauge the swirling wind and he twice missed simple penalty attempts, one slap bang in front.

Gala lost Dean Keddie to a blood injury to be replaced by Fraser Welsh, David O’Hagan moving to stand-off. Boroughmuir, at last, got it right by kicking a penalty goal but although they had Gala trapped on their own line on several occasions the defence was sound. The teams turned round with just three points separating them and the elements now in Gala’s favour. It was, however, Boroughmuir who increased their lead with another penalty goal which just defeated the wind’s attempts to blow it back.

Gala got into the home 22 from the kick off and David O’Hagan got them on the board with a well struck penalty.

Gala had to suffer a torrid time on their own line but a penalty relieved the pressure and a second penalty by David O’Hagan levelled the score.

Gala now had their subs on and went ahead with a long range penalty from David O’Hagan.

Boroughmuir stole the lead back when a series Of penalties took them to the Gala line and a rolling maul gave their big forwards an unconverted try.

Gala kicked their way downfield and forced a penalty right out at the touchline and David O’Hagan judged the wind perfectly to put Gala back in front with just five minutes left.

Gala kept the home side in the their own half as time ran out and David O’Hagans fifth penalty sealed the win with a minute left.Man-of-the-Match deservedly went to David O’Hagan.

Next week Gala A are away to Aberdeen. Gala YM’s match again fell foul of the weather and next week they are away to RDVC.
