That is what John O’Hara had heard prior to Peebles trip to Lothian Thistle HV, making his team’s battling penalty shootout win a sweet success which must rank among his best since arriving at Whitestone Park two years ago.

And now the former Gala Fairydean manager is aiming for further scalps.

He said: “There were a lot of doubters before this game who felt we would lose by four or five goals, but we showed what can be done with 11 players who are prepared to give everything.

“We don’t mind who we are playing, we will take on anyone, especially at Whitestone Park where we have only conceded three goals all season.

“We have 12 games left to play this season and have everything to play for.” Peebles’ squad gave a dressing room rendition of Stevie Wonder’s hit 'I just called to say I love you’ after their dramatic win, and they could well have been directing their affection to goalkeeper Darren Walker.

The stopper made the decisive save to deny Willis Hare, after the Rovers quartet of Jim Young, Daniel McAleavy, Scott Sutherland and evergreen veteran Frankie Arthur all found the net in the shootout. When Walker palmed away Hare’s spot kick, Peebles celebrated as if they had made the Champions League semi finals rather than the King Cup last four.

The 120 minutes beforehand were ruined by a bobbly Saughton Enclosure surface which appeared not to have been cut, as well as a teeth rattling wind which saw some goal kicks from Walker in the first half barely make it out his penalty box.

While this was a great win for Rovers, Lothian Thistle appear to be struggling since the departure of manager Kevin Twaddle.

The hosts did take the lead after just eight minutes when Connor McGregor’s inswinging corner was palmed onto his own bar by Walker, only for Alan McDonagh to backheel the ball over the line.

But they rarely threatened the Peebles goal afterwards. The visitors equalised with a Dale Richardson effort from a couple of inches out after a goalmouth stramash on 26 minutes and then dominated the second half, with the wind at their backs.

How the Tweeddale team did not make it through in normal time was partly due to poor finishing and great goalkeeping by Thistles Graham O’Brien.

Paul Murray was denied twice by O’Brien and Lee Zavaroni should have found the net, before Arthur struck the post with seconds remaining.

Sean Wringe hit the crossbar for Thistle in extra time but the homesters lost midfielder McGregor after earning a second yellow card for a poor challenge on Gerry Rossi.

Unable to force a winner in extra time, Peebles had to rely on penalties for what was a deserved victory Peebles Rovers: D. Walker, P. Scales, D. McAleavy, J. Young, D. Richardson, F. Arthur, J. Meikle (G. Dodds 90), G. Rossi, S. Sutherland, P. Murray, L. Zavaroni.
