SOME of the Borders' biggest heroes are preparing to tackle a tough 29-mile mission through the region to raise money for sporting charities.

The Hearts and Heroes Challenge will take place on Saturday and see teams from the armed forces, rugby community and sports enthusiasts taking on a beautiful but physically demanding part of the Southern Upland Way to raise money for The Sportsman's Charity, Hearts and Balls, and the veteran's charity, Poppyscotland.

Runners will set off from St Mary's Loch at 7am and have 12 hours to complete the gruelling course, which will finish at The Greenyards in Melrose.

Over 600 people will be taking part in the challenge.

Earlier this week the cause got a boost from FirstGroup, who presented Jim Littlefair, chairman of the Hearts and Balls rugby charity, with a donation of £2,000.
