FOOTBALL teams across the Borders have been invited to line-up their filthiest tackles for the 2009 Swamp Soccer New World Championships in Strachur, Argyll, later this month.

Branded "the best place for a dirty weekend", it is estimated that 50 teams will participate at this fourth global tournament, where a smattering of celebs will also be expected. It will be held at a new Swamp Soccer Arena, which has been purpose built to cope with increasing demand from the sport"s body of followers.

Teams will be provided with free pairs of waterproof, windproof and breathable socks to keep their feet keep warm, dry and comfortable. Made with SealSkinz patented technology and worn next to the skin - they offer the ultimate in close-fitting protection for feet.

Originating from the bogs of Finland, the tactics of swamp soccer are simple. Mixed or same sex teams of six players are required, with one goalkeeper, five outfield players and an unlimited number of subs. Matches are played on an oversized five-a-side pitch and last for 24 minutes.

Simple rules include no offside, plus drop-kick kick-offs, throw-ins, corner kicks, free kicks and penalties. No shoe changing is allowed for the match duration though fancy dress is permitted. Training is not necessary, though participants fitness may be challenged during boggy playing conditions.

Stewart Miller said: 'If you"re fed up with the clean-living Premiership, then Swamp Soccer is for you. It"s two days packed full of mud, mess and mayhem and is definitely not for the faint-hearted - or those who are scared of getting dirty. I encourage teams from around the UK to get down and dirty - and to bring some tough washing powder with them!'

Andrew Dahl, Managing Director at SealSkinz Sport said: 'For the first time Swamp Soccer pros will not have to suffer cold wet feet. We hope that the ground-breaking design of our revolutionary SealSkinz Sport socks will make a huge difference to the enjoyment of those who play in this year"s tournament. I am sure that they will help players focus on the game and improve their performance.'

The 2009 Swamp Soccer® New World Championships sponsored by SealSkinz Sport will take place on Saturday 27 June 9am to 6.30pm and Sunday 28 June 9am to 6pm at Strachur, Argyll.

Teams can register online at www.swampsoccer.co.uk until mid June, with a team entry costing £115. Players can either camp on site (£23 per night per tent) or opt for self-catering accommodation available at Hunters Quay Holiday Village, Dunoon. Free car parking, showers and toilets - as well as live music, ceilidhs, a bar and a choice of food and refreshments will be provided.
