FORMER Scotland and British Lions lock Doddie Weir was among the winners during the annual sports week in Stow.

The retired rugby star, who finished his playing career at the now disbanded Borders, won the Toshing the Sheaf event following the Hillheid Race on Wednesday last week.

It was one of a number of highlights of the festival week which culminated with the sports day on Saturday.

As well as the fancy dress parade on the Friday and the superstars event on the Tuesday, which attracted a record 94 entries, the crowds also turned out for the new quoiting event - a game in which flat rings of iron or rope are pitched at a stake.

And the sports were so keenly contested the parents broke the rope.

Stow Sports President John Clarke said: "It's been a fantastic week and the weather has really made it.

"We've had a great turnout at all the events and it was nice to finish with the sports on Saturday."
