Sprinters renew rivalries
THE cream of Borders sprinters will renew rivalries with the fastest man in Scotland on Friday.
Nick Smith, who won the Scottish 100 metres title for a record seventh time earlier this month, will attempt to defend his 90 metres championship crown on the grass at Langholm.
The Shaftesbury Harrier will yet again have Greg Turnbull, who finished fifth in the recent Scotstoun final, and Iskan Barskanmay in the showdown.
Smith will go into the contest as the long odds-on favourite.
But it will be a different story in the handicapped 90 metres where he gives Turnbull a 3.5 metres start and Barskanmay four metres.
TLJT flyer Craig Grieve (5.5) will be looking for a quickfire hat-trick after landing the sprints at Innerleithen and Oxton.
But the biggest threats will likely come from Tweedbank's Angus Stanners (7), Ross Weir (19) of Hawick and Edinburgh veteran Graeme Armstrong (15.5).
The tight Castleholm track often favours the front runners but Borders schoolboy champion Seb Harrison (7) will attempt to come from the back to win the 400 metres. The 17-year-old will have to peg back a field of 17 athletes with the main contenders appearing to be Sauchie's Wallace McGown (28), Hawick's Ryan Trimby (33) and Wishaw veteran Keith Redpath (55).
Selkirk nearly man Greg Gibson (75) will be looking to finally break the tape in the 800 metres, where he faces former national champion Colin Welsh (5), Lauder teenager Adam Craig (60) and Kirkcaldy's Graham Lister (37.5).
The Junior and Youth sprints have attracted over 60 youngsters with 24 entered in the 800 metres.
The action gets under way at Castleholm from 1.30pm
