A BRITISH Champion cyclist has admitted being involved in a hit and run in the Borders.

Eighteen-year-old downhill rider Lewis Buchanan, of Leithen Road, Innerleithen, apologised for the "moment of madness" when he appeared at the Justice of the Peace Court in Peebles on Thursday.

He admitted failing to stop or report an accident after reversing a black Ford Fiesta into a blue Corsa in Springwood Road, Peebles, around 3.45pm on December 15 last year.

The learner driver, who only holds a provisional licence, also pled guilty to further charges of driving without 'L' plates or an accompanied driver and having no insurance.

The court heard Buchanan was only caught after the other driver noted the number of his registration plate in her phone.

His solicitor, Douglas Neil, said: "He panicked when a school bus turned into the road because he thought it was going to hit him and reversed into the vehicle behind."

But he added: "He has not reasonable explansation to offer. He instinctively drove off without realising the consequences of doing so."

Justice of the Peace Bryan Brockie fined Buchanan a total of £350 and added six penalty points to his licence.
