Para athlete joins Borders triathlon series

THE fourth event in the 2012 Borders Sport and Leisure Trust Triathlon series took place at Peebles swimming pool on June 12th.
One hundred athletes participated in the sprint triathlon course consisting of a 750m swim, 19.46km cycle and 4.69km run, whilst 36 completed the accompanying shorter Come & Tri course.
Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Borders Sport and Leisure, the social enterprise, not-for-profit company that runs many of the sports and leisure facilities and programmes in the region said: "This was a great day with a capacity turn out of competitors.
"We were especially delighted to welcome novice para triathlete, Andy Hollingdale from Lanark. Andy had the Peebles triathlon especially recommend to him by Triathlon Scotland as the first event he should attempt and we hope it lived up to expectations."
Andy Hollingdale commented: "The Peebles triathlon was well organised friendly and all-inclusive. Due to the nature of my disability I had a few needs different from the norm and these were sorted quickly and without fuss. The other competitors where equally friendly and supportive. I lost count of the number of people passing me with an encouraging word. "
The Borders Sport and Leisure Trust Triathlon series will continue with events in Hawick (July 1st), Kelso (August 12th), Peebles (August 19th) and Eyemouth (September 23rd). These events also include a "Come & Tri" taster (shortened version of the triathlon) to encourage those who have not attempted a triathlon before to take part.
The results from the Peebles Triathlon are as follows - Top 3 Males: 1, Andrew McGhee, 1.04.25; 2, Scott Noble, 1.06.41 (also first male vet); 3, Ronnie Silverston, 1.08.34. Top 3 Females: 1, Jane Holmes, 1.1.2.27 (also first female vet); 2, Rhoda Mcpherson, 1.13.40; 3, Catherine Smith, 1.17.04.
The results from the Come & Tri Peebles Triathlon are as follows - Top 3 Males: 1, Kevin Liddell, 00.38.43; 2, Alan Cummings, 0038.53; 3, Ian Watson, 0040.23. Top 3 Females: 1, Jo Turnball, 0043.45; 2, Wilma Kerr, 0044.07; 3, Angela Gayton, 0044.15.
