It was announced last Wednesday that Kelso’s Lucy Hope will compete for Scotland in the 4x200 metre freestyle relay.

She will be joined in Team Scotland by her former BEST (Borders Elite Swimming Team) Performance Training Programme partner Daniel Wallace.

Performance coach Jordan set up the region’s training squad when he first arrived in this country from his native Australia.

The former international swimmer is delighted that both Lucy and Dan have made the 2014 team - and he believes there are many more of his young swimmers on their way to similar success. He told the Border Telegraph: “In the past swimmers had to leave the Borders to make progress. We put a programme in place a few years ago so that swimmers like Lucy didn’t have to leave the area.

“A lot of it comes down to having the right swimmers coming through your door - but we have the right programme in place for when they do and I have no doubt that there will be others who will follow the likes of Lucy and Dan.” Lucy took the plunge as an 11-year-old.

And over the past six years she has developed into one of the country’s best freestyle swimmers.

Another youngster who came through the local ranks is Duns 21-year-old Wallace.

An Olympic scholarship has taken him to Florida, where under the guidance of Gregg Troy, he has posted good enough times to be selected for the 400 metres Freestyle and 200 metres Freestyle events as well as legs of the 400 metres Individual Medley and 4x200 metres Freestyle.

Another Borderer who has made the squad is Hawick’s Jak Scott.

The 23-year-old, who has been based at Stirling for the past five years, will swim in the 4x200 metres Freestyle. Coach Jordan added: “It is great that there are three swimmers from the Borders in the team. I believe we will start to see others in the future reach the same level.

“We currently have 300 club swimmers in the Borders with 22 in the Performance Training Programme.

“After the Commonwealth Games, we have the World Championships in 2015 and then the Olympics - there’s a lot to swim for.” Selection for the 2014 Commonwealth Games continues today with the boxing, para-bowls and wrestling squads announced.

On May 7 the final places in the athletics squad will be announced. Four Borderers - Chris O’Hare, Samantha Kinghorn, Libby Clegg and Guy Learmonth - have already secured a place at Hampden.

The Badminton squad is announced on May 13 with the Rugby 7s players given the nod on May 21.
