IT began as a fun run to raise money for a new play park in Selkirk.

But it has proved so popular that organisers have revealed it will continue annually, even after the new £330,000 adventure playground in Pringle Park opened last month, to help pay for its maintenance.

The Philiphaugh Hill Race will be held in Selkirk on Sunday, August 10.

Registration will be at Selkirk Rugby Club from 9.30am until 10.45am. And the race will start at nearby Corby Lynn, which also doubles as the finish line, at 11am.

The fun run, which includes a choice of two routes, four miles or seven miles, costs £8 to enter on the day, or £5 in advance by contacting Sheila Cochrane, at 28 Anderson Road, Selkirk, TD7 4EB. Cheques should be made payable to Selkirk Play Park Project.

Sheila said: “We’re hoping everyone will be inspired by the Commonwealth Games and feel like participating!” Parking, changing and toilet facilities are available at the rugby club on the day. And there will be refreshments and a prize giving ceremony following the race around 12.30pm. Anyone can take part and beginners are welcome to walk the shorter route.

Meanwhile, entries are still open for the fifth annual Melrose Road Race on Saturday, August 31. The eight mile lap of the Eildons sets off at 11am.

The Scotia Chiropractic Massage Team based in St Boswells will now be available to all runners for a pre and post deep tissue massage this year. All profits from this will go to their own local charity.
