Kinghorn started her week with a bang, winning both the 100m and 400m on Tuesday, and topped off her collection with the T53 800m crown on Thursday in her first major international outing for Britain.

The 18-year-old edged out Hamide Kurt of Turkey for the third time in as many days, beating her by a full second after clocking a winning time of 2:18.40 minutes in the 800m.

And having had to keep her emotions in check during the first two medal ceremonies, Kinghorn was happy to let it all out as she received a third gold in Swansea.

“I cried this time,” she said. “The first two times I couldn’t let my emotion come up too high because it would have made me emotional for the rest of my races. It’s over now though, it’s finished, and I’ve come away with three gold medals which is more than I ever expected.

“I’m ecstatic – I just came here to do my best and see what would happen so I’m glad that turned into three gold medals.” With the rainy conditions in Swansea adding another complexity to the 800m final on Thursday Kinghorn says Kurt’s tactics played right into her favour, allowing her to slip through on the inside to take the win.

“I was ready to take my turn at the front but I didn’t want to go out too fast and have her sit behind me and not take her turns,” she added.

“My plan was to allow her to take the first 200m and I thought she’d pull out and come in behind me, but she didn’t want to do that.” Sainsbury’s is proud to support British Athletics through the Summer Series events and is committed to helping young people lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
