Both players got off to boggy starts with both 3 putting from distance.

The 2nd hole was halved in par. Simon went ahead with a birdie at the 3rd but Alan squared the match when Simon did not get up and down at the par 3 4th hole. Alan had putts to win the next two holes but had to settle for halves. Simon reached the par 5 7th in two but Alan sunk a long putt for a birdie and a half.

The par 3 8th was also halved when Allan got up and down from a bunker and the 9th was halved in birdies with both players out in 35.

Simon had to play a provisional ball on the 10th but found his first ball and was able to reach the green from the rough. Alan then over hit his first putt and missed the return. He then had a chance to get back to level on the next hole, but the birdie putt slipped by.

Simon managed to get a half on the 12th hole even after being in two bunkers. It was Alan’s turn to play from a bunker on the par 3, 13th. His lie was imposable with the ball at the back of the bunker and he was unable to get a proper stroke at the ball. He had to conceded the hole to go 2 down.

It looked as if he was going to get a hole back on the par 5 14th hole when Simon pushed his tee shot away to the right and was never found. His third shot from the tee was long and an iron to the middle of the green gave him a chance of a 5 which he took and when Alan’s birdie putt slipped past the hole was halved.

The 15th par 3 hole to a raised green is blind from the tee. Both players hit good shots but Simon’s ball finished 6 inches from the hole. this left Alan with a 15 footer to avoid going 3 down. Once again his put failed to find the hole. Both players were inches short of the 16th green with Simon to putt first. He rolled his ball up to the hole and this left Alan to hole his putt to keep the match going. He was unable to manage the birdie putt and the players shook hands after a great match.

President Bob Bolton presented the trophy to Simon in the Clubhouse and Simon thanked the Roxburghe for the use of the course, the green keepers for the excellent condition of the course and the staff for looking after the 16 players over the two days.
