Formed in 2013, the first ever disability swim team from the region has gone from strength to strength.

And last weekend three of the young swimmers scooped an incredible eight gold medals at the Scottish Disability Sport Junior Championships.

The event, held at Grangemouth Sports Complex, saw Beth Johnston from Galashiels Academy make a clean sweep of five golds.

The 13-year-old also broke the 50m Backstroke Scottish record, which has stood since 1996.

And to round off a memorable meet she was crowned 'Best Girl’ by judges.

Finlay Lindores, also from Galashiels Academy, returned with two golds for winning the 100m Individual Medley and the 25m Butterfly.

Burgh Primary pupil Jenna Brus, who was attending the Scottish Junior Championships for the first time, also struck gold in the 25m Backstroke.

Team manager Louise Johnston said: “Strong swimming from our team of three Border Barracudas resulted in eight gold medals, PB times and an 18-year-old backstroke record being broken.

“It was a fantastic day, competing against all Scottish regions. We did ourselves proud.” Borders Barracudas always welcomes new members and more information is available from Louise at louise139@btinternet.com.

Alan Oliver, Borders Sport and Leisure Disability Development Officer, was full of praise for the progressive club.

He added: “It was inspiring watching the swimmers do so well.

“Their performances were exceptional and for Beth to win gold in every event she entered and also to break the Scottish Record is remarkable. “All the swimmers train really hard and to see their efforts pay off is fantastic for them and for their development.”
