And on Friday evening the boys and girls who are prepared to go the distance were honoured by Ettrick and Lauderdale Sports Council.

Boxing prospered throughout much of the 20th century in towns like Galashiels, Selkirk, Hawick and Chirnside.

Champions emerged throughout the 1960s, 70s, 80s and even 90s.

But in recent decades Galashiels had thrown in the towel.

That all changed two years ago with Danny Kelly and a few mates pulling the gloves back on in a bid to fight the middle-age bulges.

They’ve moved home twice and recruited new members by the dozen - and on Friday night they were crowned heavyweight champions of the, er, Ettrick and Lauderdale.

Sports officer Mark Forsyth announced the award. He said: “This has been a real team effort with support from the whole Gala community - but it has been driven by one man from the very start.

“The blood, sweat and tears Danny Kelly has put into this club has been staggering and needs to be recognised.” Mr Kelly was joined by many coaches and boxers of all ages to collect the Club of the Year award on Friday evening at Netherdale.

Other winners at the bash were para-badminton player Alan Oliver, swimming sensation Beth Johnston, Melrose Rugby Sevens squad, apprentice jockey Sam Coltherd, coaches Pippa Bell and Rory Banks, and Mrs Selkirk Rugby Club, Mary Inglis.
