And the 16-year-old from Selkirk won’t stop nagging his trainer dad, Stuart, until he gets them.

Sam rode his first senior winner of his career at Alnwick Point to Point on Sunday aboard Darsi Dancer.

The six-year-old, which is owned and trained by Stuart, is expected to be one of the new stars of the Clarilawmuir yard after completing a hat-trick of point-to-point wins.

And the teenager, who only got his jockey’s licence last month, hopes to continue steering the hunter chaser to more victories. Sam told us: “I’ll keep at my dad for more rides although I know there are some good professionals in front of me for my dad to choose from.

“It was great to get that first win.

“Darsi travelled well and got into the race pretty early - he jumped well and did everything I asked of him. He won on his last two outings last season and that was a good win for his first time out this season.

“If Darsi keeps improving the way he has he’ll be racing under rules. I’d love to be riding him when he does.” Sam was named Ettrick and Lauderdale Junior Sports Personality of the year in November - just days after obtaining his apprentice jockey’s licence on his 16th birthday.

Having established himself as one of the Britain’s best young riders during pony club success at national and international level, he is considered by many to be one for the future.

He added: “I’m really enjoying being a jockey and I look forward to work every day.

“I hope I can get some more rides from my dad over Christmas and I’m also hopeful to get a few outside rides, now that I have an agent.” Sam’s first ride under rules saw him finish fourth at Carlisle at the start of the month.

And his one win from two at Alnwick on Sunday makes for an impressive 33 per cent strike rate.

Agent Bruce Jeffrey, who has 17 jockeys on his books, believes Sam has the talent to make it to the top. He said: “If all of my jockeys had a 33 per cent rate I’d be very happy.

“I’m telling trainers to watch out for Sam - he was very talented as a showjumper and at pony club and will be a jockey with a bright future.” Another one of Jeffrey’s young stable stars, 18-year-old Tom Hamilton from Bonchester Bridge, has already sparked plenty of interest from yards across the country.

Bruce added: “Tom and Sam are two of the brightest prospects in the Borders.

“They know each other well and they get on with each other - Sam can learn from Tom during his first few years.”
