GALA Cricket Club has received some added protection thanks to a brand new wicket cover.

The club received £750 each from Rowan Boland Memorial Trust and Club Sport Ettrick and Lauderdale for the special flat covers - which are used at test cricket grounds and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge ground - allowing more junior games to be played at Meigle Park.

A Gala CC spokesperson said: “We lost a number of games last season because our wicket was too wet.

“But the new cover means we can keep the wicket dry, and get our young players more games, which is vital for the future of the club.

“We have to thank both Club Sport Ettrick and Lauderdale and the Rowan Boland Memorial Trust for their support, it is hugely appreciated.” The covers will be put to use when Gala CC host the Rowan Boland Memorial Under 12 Trophy on Sunday, July 19.

The tournament, which is sponsored by the Borders Railway, will see a number of teams from across the Borders compete for the trophy.

There will also be entertainment on offer, as well as a barbecue, with families encouraged to attend.

The event starts at 10.30am and anyone wishing to get involved or offer help on the day can contact Ross Patterson (07917033130 or email rosspatterson7@live.co.uk).
