SELKIRK jockey Rachael McDonald is making the most of her new licence to thrill.

The 23-year-old, who rides out of the Sandy Thomson yard at Greenlaw, only gained her Category B Jockeys Licence last month.

And she has responded with a quickfire double.

Rachael already had three winners under rules as well 11 successes at point-to-point during her amateur days.

But since being able to line up against the pros last month she has already struck twice.

Her first victory was on June 28 at Cartmel where she pushed Pena Dorrada clear at odds of 8/1 for Hawick-based trainer Alistair Whillans.

And on Saturday, she again defied the odds at Cartmel aboard the same horse to land the £10,000 Burlington Stone Handicap Chase at odds of 7/2.

Rachael told us: “Pena Dorrada is going really well and it is great to get the two wins.” While Saturday’s meeting at Lake District track was a success, it was almost a diamond day as Rachael was leading over the last in the Banks Lyon Jewellers Lady Riders Handicap Hurdle.

A £5,000 necklace was waiting in the winner’s enclosure for the winning jockey.

But her mount May’s Boy tired in the final furlong to finish fourth.
