WAVERLEY Bowling Club's A team faced a busy week with firstly a home tie against Selkirk on Monday evening.
Conditions were perfect for bowling and they certainly suited Waverley as, with only one rink down by a single shot, they won the match by 127 shots to 46 to inflict Selkirk’s heaviest defeat of the season. On Wednesday they travelled to Melrose hoping for revenge for the home defeat earlier in the season. It was not to be however as Melrose won again by 91 shots to 69. The DR Lighbody knockout cup was due to be played on Friday evening with an away tie to Lauder but the home side could not raise a team and so Waverley were awarded the tie. The next game in the cup is an away tie against Earlston on August 19. The ladies were due to play Kelso on Tuesday evening but a heavy downpour meant that the Kelso green was unplayable and the game will need to be rearranged.
With the National Finals starting at Ayr this week, the league games will again be played on Monday with Waverley 'A’ away to leaders Hawick. On Friday afternoon, the qualifying for the Borders was due to be played with Waverley facing Melrose on the Abbotsford green in the senior fours but the Melrose withdrew from the competition giving Waverley a bye to the next round.
The club triples was due to be played on Sunday but will now be played nearer the end of the season.
