TWO former Selkirk High pupils were hauled up in front of the head last week.

Nyle Godsmark and Mhairi Grieve were both honoured in front of a packed assembly hall for achieving international honours on the rugby field.

Godsmark has spent the past year playing in the IRB World Sevens Series with Scotland.

And the 23-year-old winger from near Lilliesleaf was presented with his very own commemoratvie cap from his former school.

Nyle told us: “It’s great to get something for playing with Scotland Sevens as you don’t get a cap from the sevens team.

“I have a cap from playing with the Scotland Club team and this one is just as special.” Although Godsmark’s contract with Scotland Sevens wasn’t renewed for the forthcoming series he is expected to sign professional forms with a club in the next fortnight.

He added: “I am working with Glasgow Warriors just now and I hope to be in a position either next week or the week after to make a decision about next season.” One player who knows where she will be next season is Mhairi Grieve.

The 21-year-old student vet from Ashkirk has one more year left of her studies at Edinburgh University.

But she does hope to add to her six caps for Scotland Ladies.

Mhairi said: “I have missed out on playing with the Scotland Sevens team through injury but I hope to work my way back into the both the sevens and fifteens team over the summer.

“I didn’t get the opportunity to play rugby when I was at school so I played hockey - it’s only since going to university that I took rugby up again.

“This is my first time back at school since I left and I’m delighted to collect the cap.” The scrum-half made her Scottish debut last November against Italy and went on to feature in all of the Six Nations matches in February and March.

Depute headteacher Graeme Marshall, who is also one of the school’s rugby coaches, is proud of his former students.

He said: “We were fortunate enough to have Lee Jones and Sarah Robertson earning national caps for rugby and hockey in 2012.

“Here we are again with another two former pupils gaining international honours.

“Well done to both Nyle and Mhairi - for a school of our size we are doing well.”
