GALA coach George Graham revealed he was "over the moon" after watching his side end their nine game winless streak.

The Maroons recorded a 27-19 bonus point victory over Glasgow Hawks in the BT Premiership at Netherdale on Saturday.

However, despite closing the gap on Boroughmuir at the bottom of the table, he stressed they were still "a million miles away" from where they want to be.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph pitchside after the full-time whistle, Graham said: "I'm over the moon for the win. It was good to get a win, I'm not over the moon with where we are in terms of our position.

"We've played some really horrendous rugby and the boys have been disappointed in their form and the way that we've been trying to carry out the way we play the game.

"But we are capable of playing a hell of a lot better and we showed that today for long periods. Consequently we scored five tries, although we butchered a few tries as well."

Gala remain second bottom of the Premiership despite the win, with only Border rivals Selkirk below them.

However, they are now just four points, or one win, away from third bottom Boroughmuir who lost 19-17 away to Currie.

The Maroons' next game is away to league leaders Ayr who will be hurting after losing 35-24 to Melrose at the Greenyards.

Graham said: "I'm very, very pleased that we've hopefully broken that duck. We're still a million miles away from where we want to be but, at the end of the day, we have to start somewhere.

"We'll have a look at the game and keep working on what we've done well but, more importantly, we'll work at the stuff we've been poor at and try to rectify that because against Ayr next week is going to be a big ask.

"They are well drilled and have a lot of class players so we need to make sure we are at the top of our game again to get any result."
