WAISALE Serevi, one of rugby sevens" biggest living legends, said this week he was "honoured" to be turning out for the 126th Melrose Sevens on Saturday.

The Fijian star, who is widely recognised as the best sevens player of all time, was speaking at a coaching session for youngsters in Melrose yesterday (Wednesday).

And the young rugby fans no doubt thought all their Christmases had come at once as they passed a ball about in the sun with the World Cup winner.

Serevi, who has a coaching role with Leeds University and will turn out for the team on Saturday, said he was looking forward to playing at the home of rugby sevens.

He told the Border Telegraph: 'I thank Melrose for arranging for me to come and take part in the sevens this year. The club has a long history; it has given a lot to the rugby world, especially sevens rugby. It started here and for me to come and play here where it all started is an honour.

'I salute Ned Haig for the idea and I thank the club for carrying on this beautiful sevens tournament. I"m proud to be part of it.'

Leeds University will be joined by fellow guest sides Johannesburg University, Canadian side Barrhaven, and current Kings of the Sevens, Selkirk, when the tournament kicks off on Saturday.
