RUGBY clubs across the Borders have been invited to a glamour tie at Murrayfield next month.

Scottish Rugby is this year hosting an evening to salute the phenomenal contribution of the club game and the vibrancy it brings to the sport in Scotland.

President Jim Stevenson today spoke of his delight that such an event is being arranged in order to honour those who have achieved on the domestic rugby scene.

Stevenson said: "The evening has already captured the imagination of the clubs and I'm looking forward to a night which embodies everything that is good about the game in Scotland.

"I look forward to welcoming players, officials and supporters from all the clubs - with their different ties - to a very special evening on May 21.

"This season has been a year of achievement - both on and off the pitch. From grassroots level through to the participation of Ayr and Heriot's in the British and Irish Cup we have seen progress and that bodes well for the future.

"The energy and enthusiasm generated by the clubs is the heartbeat of rugby here in Scotland and this event it is a fitting way of marking that achievement."

Host for the evening will be Andy Nicol, and the former Scotland captain stresses that there are plenty of reasons to celebrate the success of the domestic club game.

Nicol said: "It promises to be a special evening. It's nice when clubs and individuals get recognition for their achievements in the game.

"There are a lot of good things happening in Scottish rugby at the moment and it is good to be able to highlight that success."

The awards dinner is specifically targeting Scottish rugby clubs and all club members and supporters are being encouraged to attend what promises to be a great evening.

It will also be an occasion to recognise the stalwarts of the rugby community - the lifeblood of the game - who give up years, sometimes decades, of their time to contribute to Scottish rugby.

The climax of the evening will be the award for club of the season with several previous club of the month recipients in attendance including the last month's winners, North Berwick.

Recently crowned champions of East League 1, North Berwick captain Cameron Ewer says the club are excited at the prospect of being in contention for the top honour and pleased to be part of the event.

Ewer said: "This season has been one to remember at North Berwick and everybody associated with the club is looking forward to celebrating at the awards evening.

"The community spirit in the club game is stronger than ever and it will be special to be part of the event at the home of Scottish Rugby."

The awards available include the Premier 1 Player of the Season, Youth Coach of the Season and Women's Club Player of the Season with all aspects of the game celebrated.

Tickets are available for £60 per head and the dress code is jacket and club tie. For more information please contact The Murrayfield Experience by telephoning 0131 346 5250 or emailing enquiries@themurrayfieldexperience.co.uk
