FORMER Borders Reivers coach Alan Tait was handed the biggest challenge of his career when he was appointed head coach at Newcastle Falcons.

Ironically, Tait, from near Kelso, takes over from his former boss at the Reivers, Steve Bates, who has been relieved of his duties at Kingston Park.

Tait, who played Rugby Union and Rugby League for his country, said that he was delighted to have been given the post.

"I am looking forward to the challenge and wish Steve all the best in the future." And acknowledged that he wanted to lift Falcons into a stronger position and get results for the club.

*Former Selkirk pro, Simon Cross, has been appointed to succeed Ian Barnes at Edinburgh Accies.

Cross (29), who last appeared for Selkirk in the April game against Currie, has had coaching experience with Murrayfield Wanderers.

He had also been badly hit by injury, which ended his Edinburgh career, retired after a succession of knee problems.
