Gala 26 - 19 Ayr
GALA'S pre-season morale received a major boost on Saturday when a friendly game played in three segments ended in a convincing win over the Scottish Cup winners and Division 1 runners-up.
Gala gave an outing to more than 30 players on an afternoon which saw some of the old guard blend well with a bunch of youngsters.
With another seven or eight players unavailable or injured, Gala were full value for their win against a powerful but also short-handed Ayr side.
Making a major impact at stand-off was Lee Miller, whose authoritative kicking set up Gala time and again, and a committed game from Euan Dods gave the Gala forwards some valuable momentum.
George Graham was well satisfied with the day, but was a realist in recognising that there were some areas needing attention before the opening matches of Division 2.
Graham Speirs was making probably his last appearance before heading south to university, and Mike Christie, whose departure to Australia has been delayed, was another who contributed to a colourful afternoon.
Two new names were George Graham's sons, Gary and George, who have been playing in Carlisle, but who showed touches from wing forward and centre respectively that must have pleased their father at the start of his second year as Gala coach.
With nine different players turning out in the permutations of the front row, Gala look well equipped to build a solid scrum, and there seems adequate cover for most positions, with the possible exception of full back, where Gregor Hunter will be missed.
Gala had the edge in try scoring, with four to Ayr's three, the last and winning score coming from the best move of the game which ended where it had begun, among the impressive Gala forwards.
