THE Bill McLaren memorial in honour of the Voice of Rugby was unveiled in Hawick on Tuesday.

A crowd of family and friends, colleagues and former pupils of the rugby commentator, teacher and journalist were present.

The bust is located in Wilton Lodge Park and overlooks Hawick High School, where Bill was a teacher.

Speaking just before the unveiling, Bill's daughter and director of the Bill McLaren Foundation said: "We've been waiting for this day with great anticipation. Wilton Lodge Park brings back great memories for me as a child and later when we brought our own kids here - you can even see the family home from here.

"We're really thankful to everyone who has worked so hard to create this lasting memorial to Dad."

The bust was unveiled by Bill's wife Bette McLaren to the sound of a lone piper playing Flower of Scotland.

The project, which cost £11,500, was completed by Hawick Community Council and funded through public subscriptions, a concert by the Glynneath Male Voice Choir, and a number of other fundraising events.
