But, despite not playing for the club for more than two months after being called up to the Scotland Under 20s squad, he wasn’t too tired to score another of his trademark tries in the 26-10 victory.

The 20-year-old winger, who joined Melrose from Boroughmuir last summer, is set to move on at the end of the season after winning a two-year professional contract with capital club Edinburgh.

When asked to sum up his season, Hoyland, who scored six tries in 11 appearances for Scotland Under 20s, told the Border Telegraph: “Unbelievable. I can’t describe it, it’s just amazing. I’ve never felt anything like that before in my life.

“I always knew we were capable (of winning the title) because we have a really good team, the guys around me have been amazing and it’s been really beneficial for me to be here.

“We were just concentrating on ourselves today, our focus was to win the game and then see what happens. We knew we could win today but we didn’t want to think too much about the Ayr game.

“The deal with Edinburgh has been a huge boost but that has all come through playing with really good players who have been fortunate enough to set me away for a few tries.” But he added: “I couldn’t sleep last night I was so buzzing for today. Now I’m really happy.” Melrose import Austin Lockington praised Hoyland and revealed he hoped to follow in his footsteps by winning a professional contract.

But, until then, he revealed he was happy with life at the Greenyards which he said was run like a professional club.

And he revealed he was looking forward to impressing at this summer’s Sevens.

Lockington said: “It’s been such a privilege playing with Damo, he is a fantastic player and I wish him all the best in his career. I hope that I can play with him again one day, which would be good.

“After the first one or two training sessions with the lads, I knew that we were destined for some big things. I’m just so chuffed (to win the league), it’s been fantastic.

“I had a really good feeling about today before the match. We had a really strong side on the pitch today. And all credit to the boys, the coaches - it’s John (Dalziel) and Bobby’s (Chrystie) first year in full control - so it’s just been a great day.

“I’m really looking forward to the Sevens but winning today was probably my biggest highlight so far. There is a good buzz between social and serious and I like how professional this club is. We have a good squad and hopefully most of the boys can stay together for next year.”
